How He Took Part in the Synods of Bishops

Such, then, was his character toward everyone. But he took special care of the church of God. In the various provinces there were some who disagreed with one another in judgment, and so, like a general bishop appointed by God, he called together synods of his ministers. He did not think it beneath him to be present and sit with them in their assembly. He took part in their discussions, serving everything that belonged to the peace of God. He took his seat in their midst as one among many, sending away his guards and soldiers and all whose duty it was to protect him. He was protected instead by the fear of God and surrounded by the care of his faithful friends. Those he saw inclined to sound judgment and showing a calm and peaceable temper won his high approval, for he plainly delighted in a common agreement of mind. But he turned away from those whose wills would not yield.
