Book 1
Constantine Enters Rome
So, after singing these praises and others like them to God, the Ruler of all and the Author of victory, as his great servant Moses had done, Constantine entered the imperial city in triumph. There the whole senate, and others of rank and distinction in the city, along with the whole Roman people, received him with shouts and overflowing joy, as if they had been set free from a prison, their faces showing the gladness of their hearts. Men, women, and children, with countless crowds of servants, hailed him with unceasing cries as their deliverer, preserver, and benefactor. But he had an inward piety toward God, and he was neither made arrogant by this applause nor lifted up by the praises he heard. He knew that he had received help from God, and at once he gave thanks to him as the Author of his victory.
