Constantine Is Taught and Reads the Scriptures

These things were done a little later. But at the time we spoke of, struck with amazement at the extraordinary vision, and resolved to worship no other God than the one who had appeared to him, he sent for those who knew the mysteries of his teachings, and asked who that God was and what the sign of the vision he had seen meant. They declared that he was God, the only Son of the one and only God, and that the sign that had appeared was the symbol of immortality, the trophy of the victory over death that he had won long ago when he lived on earth. They also taught him the reasons for his coming, and explained to him the true account of his incarnation. So he was instructed in these things, and he marveled at the divine appearance that had been shown to his eyes. Comparing the heavenly vision with the explanation he had been given, he found his judgment confirmed. And persuaded that the knowledge of these things had been given him by divine teaching, he resolved from then on to devote himself to reading the inspired writings.

Moreover, he made the priests of God his counselors, and thought it his duty to honor the God who had appeared to him with all devotion. And after this, strengthened by well-grounded hopes in him, he hurried to put out the threatening fire of tyranny.
