Book 1
The Cross of Light at Midday
So he called on him with earnest prayer and pleading, asking him to reveal who he was and to stretch out his right hand to help him in his present difficulties. And while he was praying with fervent entreaty, a most marvelous sign appeared to him from heaven. If anyone else had told the story, it might have been hard to believe. But the victorious emperor himself told it long afterward to the writer of this history, when the writer was honored with his acquaintance and company, and he confirmed his statement with an oath. Who then could hesitate to believe the account, especially since the testimony of later times has established its truth?
He said that around noon, when the day was already beginning to decline, he saw with his own eyes the trophy of a cross of light in the sky, above the sun, bearing the inscription: Conquer by this. At this sight he himself was struck with amazement, and so was his whole army, which was following him on this campaign and witnessed the miracle.
