His Thanksgiving after Baptism

The Life of Constantine

Book 4

His Thanksgiving after Baptism

Then he raised his voice and poured out a hymn of thanksgiving to God, and after it he added these words: “Now I know that I am truly blessed. Now I am sure that I have been counted worthy of immortality and have been made a partaker of divine light.” He also expressed his pity for the unhappy state of those who had no share in such blessings as his. The tribunes and generals of his army came into his presence weeping and lamenting at the thought of losing him, and praying that his life might still be prolonged. He answered them that he now possessed true life; that no one but himself could know the worth of the blessings he had received; and that he was therefore eager to hasten his departure to God rather than put it off. He then went on to complete the necessary arrangement of his affairs. He left an annual gift to the Roman inhabitants of his imperial city, divided the inheritance of the empire among his own children like a family estate, and in short made every arrangement as he himself wished.
