Book 4
Nicaea in the Twentieth Year, Jerusalem in the Thirtieth
This was the second synod the emperor called together, at Jerusalem, and it was the greatest we know of, next to the first, which he had summoned at the famous city of Bithynia. That first one was a triumphal assembly, held in the twentieth year of his reign, a thanksgiving for victory over his enemies in the very city that bears the name of victory. The present meeting added luster to the thirtieth anniversary, during which the emperor dedicated the church at the tomb of our Savior as a peace offering to God, the giver of every good thing.
