His Gifts to the Churches, to the Virgins, and to the Poor

The Life of Constantine

Book 4

His Gifts to the Churches, to the Virgins, and to the Poor

His generosity, however, was shown above all toward the churches of God. To some he granted lands; to others he issued supplies of food for the support of the poor, of orphan children, and of widows. Besides this, he showed great care and forethought in fully providing the naked and destitute with clothing. Yet he gave the most special honor of all to those who had devoted their lives to the practice of divine philosophy. That is why he showed a respect little short of veneration for God’s most holy company of those who remain virgins for life. For he was sure that the God to whom such people devoted themselves lived within their souls.
