Constantine’s Letter to Sapor, King of Persia

A copy of his letter to the king of Persia. “By keeping the divine faith I am made a sharer in the light of truth; guided by the light of truth, I grow in the knowledge of the divine faith. That is why, as my very actions show, I profess the most holy religion, and I declare that this worship is what teaches me a deeper knowledge of the most holy God. With the help of his divine power, beginning from the very shores of the ocean, I have roused each nation of the world in turn to a well-founded hope of safety. So those peoples who were groaning in slavery to the cruelest tyrants, giving way under the weight of their daily sufferings, and had almost been destroyed altogether, have been restored through my work to a far happier state. This God I confess that I hold in unceasing honor and remembrance. This God I delight to contemplate, with pure and sincere thoughts, in the height of his glory.
