His Own Money Given to Those Who Lost Lawsuits

When he decided disputes himself, he did not want the party who lost by his decision to leave his presence less contented than the winner. So he himself gave the losing side, out of his own private means, land in some cases and money in others. In this way he made sure that the loser, since he had appeared before the emperor, went away as well satisfied as the one who had won the case. For he thought that no one should ever leave an audience with such a prince downcast and sorrowful. So it happened that both parties went home from the hearing with glad and cheerful faces, while the emperor’s noble generosity won everyone’s admiration.
