Helena’s Generosity

The Life of Constantine

Book 3

Helena’s Generosity

For on a tour she made of the eastern provinces in the splendor of imperial authority, she gave abundant proof of her generosity, both to the people of the various cities as a whole and to individuals who came to her, while she also scattered gifts among the soldiers with a lavish hand. But her gifts were most abundant of all to the naked and helpless poor. To some she gave money, to others a generous supply of clothing. Some she set free from prison or from the bitter slavery of the mines; others she rescued from unjust oppression; and others again she brought back from exile.
