Constantine’s Prayer for the East

“And now I beg you, most mighty God, be merciful and gracious to your Eastern nations, to your people in these provinces, worn down as they are by long miseries, and grant them healing through your servant. Not without reason, holy God, do I bring this prayer to you, the Lord of all. Under your guidance I have planned and carried out measures full of blessings. With your sacred sign going before me I have led your armies to victory; and still, whenever the state is in danger, I follow the same symbol of your perfections as I advance to meet the enemy. That is why I have dedicated to your service a soul rightly tempered by love and fear. For I truly love your name, and I revere the power of which you have given abundant proofs to confirm and increase my faith. I hasten, then, to devote all my powers to restoring your most holy dwelling place, which those profane and ungodly men have defiled with the pollution of violence.
