A Letter Condemning Idolatry

The Life of Constantine

Book 2

A Letter Condemning Idolatry

Moreover the emperor, who kept advancing in devotion to God, sent a letter of warning to the people of every province about the error of idolatry into which those who held power before him had fallen. In it he eloquently urges his subjects to acknowledge the Supreme God, and openly to declare their allegiance to his Christ as their Savior. This letter too is in his own handwriting, and I have thought it necessary to translate it from the Latin for the present work, so that we may hear, as it were, the voice of the emperor himself speaking these thoughts in the hearing of all mankind.
