Book 3
Lucifer Goes to Antioch and Consecrates Paulinus
It was decided, then, that Lucifer should go to Antioch in Syria and Eusebius to Alexandria, so that by holding a synod together with Athanasius they might confirm the doctrines of the church. Lucifer sent a deacon to represent him, and through him pledged himself to agree to whatever the synod might decide. But he himself went to Antioch. There he found the church in great disorder, because the people were not agreed among themselves. For not only did the Arian heresy, which Euzoius had brought in, divide the church; but, as we said before, the followers of Meletius, out of attachment to their teacher, also kept themselves apart from those whose beliefs they shared. So when Lucifer had made Paulinus their bishop, he left again.
