The Death of Arsacius and the Ordination of Atticus

But Arsacius did not long survive his appointment to the bishopric. He died on the eleventh of November in the following consulship, which was Stilicho’s second and Anthemius’s first. Because the bishopric had become an object of desire and many aspired to the vacant see, much time passed before a successor was chosen. But at last, in the following consulship, which was the sixth of Arcadius and the first of Probus, a devout man named Atticus was raised to the bishopric. He was a native of Sebaste in Armenia and had followed an ascetic life from an early age. Besides a moderate share of learning, he had a great deal of natural good sense. But I will speak of him more fully a little later.
