Book 5
The Leading Bishops of the Time
At this time Damasus, who had succeeded Liberius, presided over the church at Rome. Cyril still held the church at Jerusalem. The church at Antioch, as we have said, was divided into three parts. The Arians had chosen Dorotheus to succeed their bishop Euzoius, while of the rest, one part was under the government of Paulinus and the others ranged themselves with Meletius, who had been recalled from exile. Lucius, though he had been forced to leave Alexandria and was absent, still held the office of bishop among the Arians of that city, while the Homoousians there were led by Timothy, who had succeeded Peter. At Constantinople, Demophilus, the successor of Eudoxius, presided over the Arian party and held the churches; but those who would not be in communion with him held their meetings apart.
