Book 4
Demophilus and Evagrius at Constantinople
The emperor Valens left Constantinople and set out again toward Antioch. But when he reached Nicomedia, a city of Bithynia, his journey was halted by the following events. Eudoxius, bishop of the Arian church, who had held the see of the church of Constantinople for nineteen years, died soon after the emperor left that city, in the third consulship of Valentinian and Valens. So the Arians appointed Demophilus to succeed him. But the Homoousians, thinking that an opportunity had been given them, elected a certain Evagrius, a man who held their own principles, and Eustathius, who had been bishop of Antioch, formally ordained him. Eustathius had been recalled from exile by Jovian, and at this time had come secretly to Constantinople to strengthen the adherents of the doctrine of the homoousion.
