Their Sins Smoothed Away

The Shepherd’s Closing Charge

“All these things that are written above, I, the shepherd, the angel of repentance, have shown and spoken to the servants of God. So if you believe, and listen to my words, and walk in them, and set your ways straight, you will be able to live. But if you go on in wickedness and in keeping offenses in mind, no one of that kind will live to God. Everything I had to say to you has now been said.”

The Question Hermas Forgot

Then the shepherd himself said to me, “Have you asked me everything?” “Yes, sir,” I said. “Then why did you not ask me about the shape of the stones that were set into the building — why we filled the shapes in?” “I forgot, sir.”

“Listen now,” he said, “about them. These are the ones who have now heard my commands and repented with their whole heart. And when the Lord saw that their repentance was good and pure, and that they were able to stay in it, he ordered their former sins to be wiped out. For those shapes were their sins, and they were smoothed level so that they would not show.”
