The Church History, Book 6
Works Written at Alexandria
To this it should be added that in the sixth book of his Expositions of the Gospel according to John he indicates that he composed the first five while he was still at Alexandria. Of his work on this whole Gospel, only twenty-two volumes have come down to us. In the ninth of his books On Genesis (there are twelve in all), he shows that not only the books before the ninth were written at Alexandria, but also those on the first twenty-five Psalms and those on Lamentations. Of these, five volumes have come down to us, and in them he also mentions his books On the Resurrection. These too are two in number. He also wrote On First Principles before moving away from Alexandria. And the books entitled Stromateis, ten in number, he composed in the same city during the reign of Alexander, as the notes in his own hand at the head of the volumes show.
