The Church History, Book 6
Symmachus the Translator
As for these translators, it should be known that Symmachus was an Ebionite. The heresy called that of the Ebionites belongs to those who say that Christ was the son of Joseph and Mary, taking him to be a mere man, and who insist that the law must be kept in a more Jewish way, as we have learned somewhere earlier in this history. Commentaries of Symmachus are still in circulation, in which he seems to strengthen this heresy by arguing against the Gospel according to Matthew. Origen indicates that he received these, along with other interpretations of the Scriptures by Symmachus, from a certain Juliana, who, he says, inherited the books from Symmachus himself.
