The Church History, Book 5
Other Writers of the Time
Many people still preserve a great many memorials of the virtuous zeal of the ancient churchmen of that time. Among those we ourselves have come to know are the writings of Heraclitus on the Apostle; those of Maximus on the question so much discussed among the heretics, where evil comes from, and on matter having been created; those of Candidus on the six days of creation, and of Apion on the same subject; likewise those of Sextus on the resurrection; some other treatise by Arabianus; and the works of countless others. Because we have no starting point for them, it is not possible to record their dates in writing or to note any account of their history. The writings of a great many others have also come down to us whose very names we cannot list. They were orthodox churchmen, as each one’s interpretation of the divine Scripture shows; but they are unknown to us, because the writings do not bear their authors’ names.
