The Church History, Book 5
Bishops of the Time
In the tenth year of the reign of Commodus, Victor succeeded Eleutherus, who had served as bishop for thirteen years. In the same year, when Julian had completed his tenth year, Demetrius was entrusted with the ministry of the churches at Alexandria. At this time Serapion, already mentioned, the eighth from the apostles, was still well known as bishop of the church at Antioch. Theophilus led the church at Caesarea in Palestine, and Narcissus, whom we have also mentioned before, likewise still held the ministry of the church at Jerusalem. In the same period Bacchylus was bishop of Corinth in Greece, and Polycrates of the church at Ephesus. Besides these, countless others, as is likely, were prominent at this time. But we have rightly listed by name only those whose soundness in the faith has come down to us in writing.
