The Church History, Book 5

The Bishops of Jerusalem

In their time Narcissus, who is celebrated by many to this day, was known as bishop of the church at Jerusalem. He held the fifteenth place in the succession from the siege of the Jews under Hadrian. From that time, as we have shown, the church there was first made up of Gentiles, after those of the circumcision, and Marcus was the first bishop from the Gentiles to lead them. After him, the lists of succession there record that Cassianus was bishop; after him Publius; then Maximus; after them Julian; then Gaius; after him Symmachus, and another Gaius, and again another Julian; besides these Capito, Valens and Dolichianus; and after all of them Narcissus, the thirtieth from the apostles in regular succession.
