Anpleunis van den Berge, in the Year 1569

This Anpleunis van den Berge, because in the year 1556 he had allowed the Word of God to be truly and openly preached on his land, and because he had lodged some of the brothers, had to leave his own house and property, and hide himself, and stay with other good friends (so severe was the persecution against the Christians then), until at last, while he was walking on the road, he was arrested, and this only because someone who saw him walking said: "There goes the man who allowed preaching on his land." And though he offered the officer who arrested him his purse containing fifty pounds Flemish, if he would let him go, he was nevertheless taken along to prison at Kortrijk, where, after a bold confession of his faith, he was very severely tortured, by scourging as well as in other ways; but since he would in no way renounce his faith, or implicate any of his fellow members, he was finally sentenced to death, and burned, in the year 1569, thus obtaining a house and inheritance which shall never be taken from him. Second Corinthians 5, verse 1.
