Daniel Kalvaert, Burned, in the Year 1564
Daniel Kalvaert, a native of Thielt in Flanders, was arrested in the year 1564 at Armentiers, for the testimony of the truth, and from there taken to Rijssel, but after being subjected to some solicitation and torture, he was brought back to Armentiers, escorted by forty beadles, and there sentenced by the authorities to be burned alive to ashes. This offering he boldly brought, after which his ashes were thrown into the river Leye.
