Jan Grendel, in the Year 1562

In the year 1562, a man named Jan Grendel, from Kortrijck in Flanders, came from Cludewater to Goes, and on the same evening he arrived in town he was arrested by bailiff Vijtwijck, who took him to his house and questioned him about his faith. He made open confession, and was put in prison, where he lay about a year. Bailiff Vijtwijck having been deposed from his bailiwick for maladministration, another man named Floris Schaeck stepped into this office; and under him Jan, after many urgings and sufferings, was publicly burned, or put to death, in the marketplace, for his faith, in Lent of the year 1562.
