Jelis de Groot, and Mahieu van Halewijn, in the Year 1559
At Kortrijck, in Flanders, there were two God-fearing and simple brothers, one named Jelis de Groot, the other Mahieu van Halewijn, who would much rather suffer affliction with the people of God than enjoy every vain pleasure with the wicked world. They could not escape that affliction either; for in the year 1559 they were arrested, and immediately examined concerning their faith, which they freely confessed and held to until the end, in spite of the threats made against them and the torments inflicted upon them on this account. So they were finally sentenced to death for their steadfastness, and, as valiant heroes of God, publicly, in the sight of many, passed through temporal death, to await, with their fellow brothers gone before under the altar, the day of their avenging. Revelation 6, verse 9.
