MAERTEN ZAEYWEVER, JORIS OUDKLEERKOOPER, WILLEM DROOGSCHEERDER, VICTOR AND PIETER DE BACKER, IN THE YEAR 1557

The bloodthirsty men who force the conscience were still not satisfied. At Antwerp, in the year 1557, they arrested five devout Christians, namely, Maerten Zaeywever, Joris Oudkleerkooper, Willem Droogscheerder, Victor and Pieter de Backer, and assailed them with many schemes, threats and tortures, to rob them of their precious treasure, which they kept so faithfully in earthen vessels, to the honor of God, that it could not be taken from them. For this the others were so filled with envy that they put them to a shameful death, publicly in the market place. But God will crown them, together with His faithful servants, with great honor and joy, when the others will have to go with shame into everlasting misery.
