Old Book of the Martyrs Mirror: 1550s
John Knel or Buchner, and Anna Cantiana, in the Year 1550
In the year 1550, two pious witnesses of Jesus were imprisoned in the city of London, in England: a man by the name of John Knel or Buchner, and a woman named Anna Cantiana. Among other things, they believed and confessed with Menno Simons and all true believers that the Son of God became man for our sakes, and that He did not receive His humanity from Mary or from any other source, but that the eternal Word or Son Himself became flesh, or man. Since those named above could by no means be brought to apostatize, but would firmly hold to the truth they had accepted, they, after suffering many torments, were condemned to death at that place. John Knel was burned on the second of May, in the year 1550. Anna Cantiana was also burned to ashes the same year. According to the testimony of John Fox, she was always ready to render service to others, especially to those who were in bonds and in prison, with whom she constantly was, to minister to them. And since these martyrs named above suffered all this for the testimony of Jesus, and not on account of any crime, and steadfastly died for the truth, and were not ashamed of Christ and His word in this life, before men, He will also not be ashamed of them before His Father, but will, out of grace, bestow upon them and upon all the blessed the kingdom prepared for them from the beginning.
