Willem, Martigen, Dieuwertgen, and Maritgen Jans, in the Year 1550

In the year 1550, four lambs of Christ were apprehended at Leyden, in Holland, namely, a brother and three sisters, named Willem, Maritgen, Dieuwertgen and Maritgen Jans. They frankly confessed their faith, and no pain or suffering had power to make them apostatize; they were finally sentenced to death as heretics.

When they were brought forth, Willem said,

"We do not suffer as thieves or murderers, but for the name of the Lord; therefore, O Lord, forgive those who do this to us."

Maritgen said: "Lord, strengthen us, who suffer for Your Word, which few are willing to do. I am not worthy to suffer for Your name; but, Lord, You will make me worthy." Acts 5, verse 41.

Dieuwertgen came forward singing, and then said, "Dear citizens, do not avenge this; for it is done for the name of the Lord." She further said,

"Lord, look upon us, who suffer for Your word; for our trust is in You alone."

Maritgen Jans said: "This is the narrow way to salvation. O Lord, receive my spirit. And you lords of the council, only consider what great injury you are doing to your souls in shedding innocent blood; therefore repent, like those of Nineveh; for we do not suffer on account of heresy or sedition; we do not seek to contend, except with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." Then, commending their souls into the hands of God, they offered up their sacrifice, presenting an acceptable savor to God, for which they will not lose their reward hereafter.
