Seven Brothers, in the Year 1536
In this year, too, seven brothers, namely, Hans Beck, Wolfert Schneider, Christian Alzeiter, Balthasar Gesel, Wolfert from Getzenberg, Hans Maurer, and Peter Kranewitter, from Gofedaum in Etschland, were arrested. Various things were tried with them, to overcome them and draw them away; but since they could not be moved, and held to their faith and to the truth, they were sentenced to death by the children of Pilate, who, on the advice of the high priest, gave them to the executioner, who had to bring the matter to a close. So they were put to death, powerfully urging the people to repent, and declaring that this was the divine truth, showing that no impure, false, idle, or careless hearts can stand the test. Wolfert had once fallen away, and consented to the will of the wicked; but afterwards he grieved and lamented over the course he had taken. When after a few days he was called before the judge again, he confessed the Lord once more, and said that the devil had deceived him in what he had done against God. He was then put back into the tower with the others, and with them steadfastly suffered death, and in this way they together testified with their blood to the truth, at Gofedaum.
