Herman, Andrew and Guillemette* Exhumed and Burned, in the Year 1299

In the year 1299, the Fratricelli, that is, the Albi Waldenses, who were called Little Brothers, were declared heretics by Pope Boniface the Eighth, because their belief was contrary to the Roman church, as we have already shown. This pope had these Fratricelli (or Albigenses) persecuted with so much violence that he not only did not spare the living, but not even the dead; for he had one Herman, who had been one of their chief teachers, exhumed twenty years after his death, and his bones burned to ashes, even though the papists, who were his enemies, had, during his lifetime, regarded him as a holy man. They did the same with the dead bodies of one Andrew, and of his wife Guillemette, who were also greatly noted for their remarkable godliness.
