FURTHER SPREADING OF THE AFORESAID PERSECUTION, IN WHICH THE WALDENSES WERE BURNED IN GREAT NUMBERS, IN THE YEAR 1284

P. J. Twisck gives the following account for the year 1284: "The Waldois, or Waldenses, of whom much mention has been made since the year 1159, increased at this time more and more, in France and in other countries of Christendom, even though they were craftily sought out and cruelly persecuted, and though all diligence and every means had first been used to exterminate them entirely; which greatly astonished certain bishops and advocates of Avignon of that time." "They were burned," he writes, "in great numbers." Chron., folio 611, 612, from Henr. Boxhorn, folio 26.
