COMMENCEMENT PROPER OF THE HISTORY OF THE MARTYRS OF THIS CENTURY GREAT PERSECUTION OF THE BELIEVERS, IN THE YEAR 1206
In the year 1206, it is recorded that Pope Innocent the Third exercised great cruelty against the followers of the doctrine of Peter Bruis and Henry of Toulouse, who, among other things, rejected infant baptism, the mass, and transubstantiation, as has already been stated. The manner, however, in which this cruelty was shown toward them is not stated. P. J. Twisck, Chron., page 523, column 1.
Undoubtedly the pope then caused to be carried out what he had threatened in the year 1198, in his three letters, against the Waldenses and others who were called heretics, namely, that they should be stripped of their goods, driven out of the country, and the material sword of the princes used against them. Concerning these three letters and threats, see A. Mell., 2nd book, folio 444, columns 2 and 3, and folio 445, column 1.
