Of the Swearing of Oaths
To confirm a cause that was just and true in itself, the fathers of the Old Testament were permitted to swear by the name of God. Deuteronomy 6, verse 13; Matthew 5, verse 33.
But the Son of the living God, the King and Lawgiver of the New Testament, whose command we are bound to obey by a voice from God out of heaven, has forbidden Christians all swearing, and so does the apostle James. Therefore the swearing of oaths is forbidden to the believers of the New Testament. Matthew 3, verse 17; Matthew 17, verse 5; Matthew 5, verse 34; James 5, verse 12.
