Ninth Century
Concerning the Time of This History
NOTE. P. J. Twisck gives two different accounts of it; in the first he sets the date in the year 869. Chron. 9th book, page 306, column 2, from Hist. Andr., folio 160. In the second he sets it in the year 884. Page 311, column 2, from John Munster, folio 83. In the first place he calls him Johannes
Scotus, in the second, Johannes Erigena; however, as the account itself declares, it is the same person:
As to the dates 869 and 884, to which he has assigned the history of this Johannes, someone might think that these could not very well be reconciled; yet it may easily be done, if we take the year 869 as the time in which this martyr flourished and spread his doctrine, and the year 884 as the time when he died and was martyred for the principles which he taught.
