Metras, a God Fearing Old Man, Pierced with Reeds, and Stoned to Death
METRAS, A GOD FEARING OLD MAN, PIERCED WITH REEDS, AND STONED TO DEATH, FOR THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, AT ALEXANDRIA, IN THE YEAR
252
Metras, also called Metranus, a God fearing old man, was now seized by the rioting people at Alexandria, and ordered to speak blasphemous words against God; that is, to blaspheme the name of God, and to forsake the Savior, Jesus. But since he refused to do so, they beat him all over his body with sticks, pricked and pierced his face and eyes with sharp reeds, and, having martyred him in this way, led him out of the city, and stoned him to death in the suburbs. Euseb., book 6, chapter 41, folio 122, letter O, taken from the letter of Dionys. Alexandrinus to Fabian, concerning the martyrs in Alexandria. Compared with A. Mell., 1st book, folio 67, column 1. Also, Joh. Gys., folio 19, column 4. Also, Introduction, folio 40, column 1.
