An Edict Published by Those of Schaffhausen Against Those Called Anabaptists

AN EDICT PUBLISHED BY THOSE OF SCHAFFHAUSEN AGAINST THOSE CALLED ANABAPTISTS, ABOUT THE YEAR 1650

At this time the persecution of the sheep of Christ was not confined within the limits of Zurich and Berne; but as a fire of gunpowder, or a flash of lightning, quickly passes from one place to another, so it went here also; for those of Schaffhausen, which is one of the Swiss cities designated by the name of Cantons, following the footsteps of their fellow believers, also took, just as the others had, to banishing the defenseless people who, having until then lived peaceably under their protection, were called Anabaptists.

They were, however, given some time in which they might leave with their families; so the distress of those to whom this happened was not as great as that of those we mentioned before, and of whom we shall speak later.

All this was caused by a certain edict published for this purpose, which, if it were necessary, could be presented here; but for certain reasons we must be brief, and shorten our account as much as possible.
