Old Book of the Martyrs Mirror: 1580s
Joost de Tollenaer, Michiel Buyse, and Sijntgen Wens, in the Year 1589
On the 13th of January, in the year 1589, at ten o'clock at night, two brothers and one sister were arrested at Ghent, in Flanders, for the practice of the truth and for following Christ, namely, Joost de Tollenaer, Michiel Buyse, and Sijntgen Wens; who, after much temptation and torment (in which they remained constantly steadfast), were finally sentenced to death publicly as heretics, but were strangled at the stake secretly, with locked doors, in the count's castle, after which the two brothers were suspended from the gallows outside, and the woman buried under it, which happened on the 13th of April of the aforesaid year 1589.
And since several letters of Joost de Tollenaer have come into our hands, we have added them here, for the benefit of the reader.
