Michiel van Bruyssel, and Barberken his Wife, in the Year 1573

About the year 1573, Michiel van Bruyssel and Barberken his wife were imprisoned for the testimony of Jesus at Ghent, in Flanders. Because they were not of the world, but had been chosen by God out of the world, the world, which loves only its own, therefore hated, persecuted and oppressed them. But they, as wise builders, had built their foundation on the cornerstone Christ Jesus, who was able to keep their treasure until the day of their redemption. So then, after many temptations and trials of their faith, they were put to death by the blinded, God-opposing papists, not for any evil deed, but only for the obedience of the truth of Jesus Christ. Michiel van Bruyssel was burned in the Friday Market, and Barberken his wife was beheaded with the sword in the count's castle. And so they remained faithful until death to their Redeemer and Savior; therefore they shall receive an eternal and glorious kingdom, and a beautiful crown, from the hand of the Lord, which no one shall be able to take away from them.
