Isaiah

Isaiah 3

Jerusalem Brought Low

“Look, the Master, the Lord of armies, will remove from Jerusalem and Judah every strong man and woman, along with the support of bread and water:”
“The giant and the strong, the warrior, judge, prophet, diviner, and elder,”
“The captain of fifty, honored counselor, skilled artisan, and intelligent listener.”
“I will appoint youths as their rulers, and mockers will rule over them.”
“The people will attack one another, each person his neighbor. A child will insult an elder, and a dishonorable person will insult someone honorable.”
“A man will seize his brother or someone of his father’s household and say, ‘You have clothing. Become our head, and let my food be under your authority.’”
“But on that day he will answer, ‘I will not be your head. I have neither bread nor clothing in my house. I will not be the head of this people.’”
“Jerusalem has been abandoned, and Judah has fallen. Their tongues speak with lawlessness, and they disobey the Lord. Now their glory has been brought low.”
“The shame on their faces has confronted them. They proclaimed their sin like Sodom and made it plain. Woe to their soul, because they planned evil counsel against themselves.”
“They said, ‘Let us bind the righteous one, because he is inconvenient to us.’ Therefore they will eat the fruit of their own works.”
“Woe to the lawbreaker! Harm will come to him according to what his own hands have done.”
“My people, your collectors strip you, and extortioners rule over you. Those who call you blessed mislead you and confuse the path beneath your feet.”
“Now the Lord rises to give judgment. He stands to judge his people.”
“The Lord himself will enter into judgment with his people’s elders and rulers: Why did you burn my vineyard? Why is the poor people’s plunder in your houses?”
“Why do you wrong my people and shame the poor?”
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Because Zion’s daughters are proud, walking with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, dragging their robes as they walk, and playing with their feet,’”
“Therefore God will humble Zion’s leading daughters, and the Lord will expose their appearance.”
“On that day the Lord will take away their splendid clothing, curls, fringes, and crescent ornaments,”
“Their chains and facial ornaments,”
“He will take away their splendid array, armlets, bracelets, braided ornaments, ornaments for the right hand, rings, and earrings.”
“He will take away the purple-bordered garments and the purple-centered garments.”
“He will take away the wraps worn in the house and the transparent Spartan garments.”
“He will take away the fine linen, blue and scarlet cloth, linen woven with gold and blue, and the light coverings for couches.”
“Instead of sweet fragrance there will be dust. Instead of a belt, a rope. Instead of a gold ornament, baldness because of your works. And instead of a purple-centered tunic, sackcloth.”
“The beautiful son you love will fall by the sword, and your strong men will fall by the sword.”
“The places where you stored your ornaments will be brought low and mourn. You will be left alone and leveled with the ground.”
