Genesis 9

God’s Covenant with Noah

1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Increase and multiply. Fill the earth and master it. 2 The dread and fear of you will be on all the wild beasts of the earth, on all the birds of the sky, on everything that moves on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. I have given them into your hands. 3 Every creeping thing that lives will be yours for food. Like the green plants, I have given you everything. 4 But you must not eat flesh with the blood of its life. 5 For your own blood, the blood of your lives, I will surely require: I will require it from the hand of every wild beast, and from the hand of a man’s brother I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds a man’s blood — in return for that blood, his own will be shed. For in the image of God I made man. 7 But you — increase and multiply. Fill the earth and multiply on it.”

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “See, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your offspring after you, 10 and with every living soul that is with you — birds, cattle, and all the wild beasts of the earth that are with you, all that came out of the ark. 11 I will establish my covenant with you: never again will all flesh die by the waters of the flood, and never again will there be a flood of water to destroy the whole earth.”

12 And the Lord God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I set between me and you and every living soul with you, for all generations forever: 13 I set my bow in the cloud, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I gather clouds over the earth, my bow will be seen in the cloud, 15 and I will remember my covenant between me and you and every living soul in all flesh. Never again will the water become a flood to wipe out all flesh. 16 My bow will be in the cloud, and I will look at it and remember the everlasting covenant between me and every living soul in all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have made between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Noah and His Sons

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from them people were scattered over the whole earth.

20 Noah began to farm the land, and he planted a vineyard. 21 He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and he was naked in his house. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness, and he went out and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it over both their backs, and walked in backward, and they covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah sobered from the wine and learned all that his younger son had done to him,

25 he said:

“Cursed be Canaan;
a household servant he will be to his brothers.”

26 And he said:

“Blessed be the Lord God of Shem,
and Canaan will be his servant.
27 May God make room for Japheth,
and let him dwell in the houses of Shem,
and let Canaan be their servant.”

28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 All the days of Noah came to 950 years, and he died.
