Proverbs 16

The Lord Directs the Steps

All the works of the humble are visible before God, but the ungodly will perish on an evil day.
Everyone proud in heart is unclean before God, and whoever joins hands unjustly will not be acquitted.
The beginning of a good road is doing righteous things, and this is more acceptable to God than making sacrifices.
Whoever seeks the Lord will find knowledge with righteousness, and those who seek him rightly will find peace.
All the Lord’s works are done with righteousness, but the ungodly person is kept for an evil day.

A King’s Lips

An oracle is on a king’s lips, and his mouth will not go astray in judgment.
The balance’s inclination is righteousness before the Lord, and his works are righteous weights.
Someone who does evil is detestable to a king, for a throne of rule is prepared with righteousness.
Righteous lips are acceptable to a king, and he loves upright words.
A king’s fury is a messenger of death, but a wise man will appease him.
A king’s son is in the light of life, and those acceptable to him are like a late rain cloud.
The offspring of wisdom are more desirable than gold, and the offspring of discernment more desirable than silver.
The paths of life turn away from evils, and roads of righteousness bring length of life. Whoever receives instruction will live among good things, and whoever guards corrections will become wise. Whoever guards his own roads preserves his own soul, and whoever loves his life will restrain his mouth.
Arrogance leads before crushing, and an evil mind before a fall.
A gentle-tempered person with humility is better than one who divides plunder with arrogant people.
One who understands practical matters finds good things, and whoever trusts in God is blessed.
People call the wise and understanding worthless, but those whose speech is pleasant will hear more.
Reflection is a fountain of life for those who possess it, but the instruction of fools is evil.
The heart of the wise will understand what comes from his own mouth, and he will wear discretion on his lips.
Good words are honeycomb, and their sweetness heals the soul.
There are roads that seem right to a man, but their end looks toward the depth of Hades.
A man who toils toils for himself and forcibly drives his own destruction away, but a crooked man carries destruction on his own mouth.
A foolish man digs up evils for himself and stores fire on his own lips.
A crooked man sends out evils, lights a torch of deceit for evil people, and separates friends.
A lawbreaker tests his friends and leads them onto roads that are not good.
One who fixes his eyes devises twisted things and marks out every evil with his lips; he is a furnace of evil.
Old age is a crown of boasting, and it is found on roads of righteousness.
A patient man is better than a strong man, and one who controls anger is better than one who captures a city.
All things come into the laps of the unjust, but every righteous thing comes from the Lord.
