Psalms
Psalms 139
For the end. A psalm by David.
Lord, you tested me and knew me.
You knew when I sat and when I rose; you understood my thoughts from far away.
You traced my path and my boundary line and foresaw all my ways.
There is no word on my tongue.
Look, Lord, you knew everything—the last things and the ancient things. You formed me and placed your hand upon me.
Your knowledge became wonderful beyond me; it became too strong for me to reach it.
Where can I go from your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I descend to Hades, you are present.
If I take up my wings at dawn and settle at the farthest reaches of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me and your right hand will hold me.
I said, “Perhaps darkness will trample me, and night will become light in my delight.”
But darkness will not be dark because of you, and night will be illuminated like day; its darkness will be like its light.
You acquired my inmost parts, Lord, and supported me from my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to you, because I was made wonderfully awe-inspiring. Your works are wonderful, and my soul knows this very well.
My bone was not hidden from you, which you made in secret, nor was my substance hidden in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unfinished form, and everyone will be written in your book. Days will be formed, though no one is among them.
Your friends became very precious to me, God; their dominions became very strong.
I will count them, and they will multiply beyond the sand. I awoke and am still with you.
If only you would kill sinners, God! You bloodthirsty men, turn away from me.
You will speak against their thought; they will take your cities in vain.
Did I not hate those who hate you, Lord? Did I not waste away because of your enemies?
I hated them with complete hatred; they became my enemies.
Test me, God, and know my heart; examine me and know my paths.
See whether a way of lawlessness is in me, and guide me in a way that lasts forever.
