Psalms 106

Hallelujah.

Give thanks to the Lord, because he is kind, because his mercy lasts forever.
Who will speak of the Lord’s mighty acts and make all his praises heard?
Blessed are those who keep judgment and practice righteousness at every moment.
Remember us, Lord, in the good pleasure you show your people; visit us with your rescue,
so we may see the kindness of your chosen ones, rejoice in your nation’s gladness, and boast with your inheritance.
We sinned with our fathers; we acted lawlessly and unjustly.
Our fathers in Egypt did not understand your wonders or remember your abundant mercy; they provoked him while going up at the Red Sea.
Yet he saved them because of his name, to make his might known.
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; he guided them through the deep as through a wilderness.
He saved them from the hand of those who hated them and ransomed them from an enemy’s hand.
Water covered those who afflicted them; not one of them remained.
Then they trusted his words and sang his praise.
They hurried and forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.
They craved intensely in the wilderness and tested God in a waterless land.
He gave them what they requested and sent fullness into their souls.
They angered Moses in the camp and Aaron, the Lord’s holy one.
The earth opened and swallowed Dathan and closed over Abiram’s gathering.
Fire was kindled in their gathering, and a flame burned up sinners.
They made a calf at Horeb and bowed down to the carved image.
They exchanged their glory for the likeness of a calf that eats grass.
They forgot the God who saved them, who did great things in Egypt,
wonders in the land of Ham and fearsome things at the Red Sea.
He said he would destroy them, if Moses his chosen one had not stood before him in the destruction to turn his anger away and keep him from destroying them.
They treated the desirable land as nothing and did not trust his word.
They complained in their tents and did not listen to the Lord’s voice.
So he raised his hand against them, to strike them down in the wilderness,
strike their offspring down among the nations, and scatter them through the lands.
They were initiated into Baal-peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
They provoked him with their practices, and the downfall multiplied among them.
Then Phinehas stood and made atonement, and the destruction stopped.
It was counted to him as righteousness from generation to generation, forever.
They also angered him at the water of dispute, and Moses suffered because of them,
because they provoked his spirit, and he made a declaration with his lips.
They did not completely destroy the nations the Lord had told them about.
Instead, they mixed with the nations and learned their works.
They served their carved images, and it became a stumbling block to them.
They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.
They poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to Canaan’s carved images, and the land became bloodstained by murder.
It was defiled by their works, and they acted like prostitutes in their practices.
The Lord became fiercely angry with his people and detested his inheritance.
He handed them over to the hands of nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.
Their enemies afflicted them, and they were humbled under their hands.
Many times he rescued them, but they provoked him with their counsel and were humbled by their lawlessness.
Yet he saw them in their affliction when he heard their plea.
He remembered his covenant and relented according to his abundant mercy.
He caused everyone who had taken them captive to have compassion on them.
Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, so we may give thanks to your holy name and boast in your praise.
Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, from age to age. And all the people will say,
“May it be! May it be!”
