Psalms
Psalms 60
For the end, for those who will still be changed. An inscription by David, for teaching, when he burned Mesopotamia of Syria and Syria of Zobah, and Joab returned and struck 12,000 in the Valley of Salt.
1 God, you rejected and tore us down; you became angry and then showed us compassion.
2 You shook the earth and troubled it. Heal its fractures, because it was shaken.
3 You showed your people hard things; you made us drink wine that brought piercing sorrow.
4 You gave those who fear you a signal to flee from the bow’s presence. Pause.
5 So that your beloved ones may be rescued, save with your right hand and listen to me.
6 God spoke in his holy place:
“I will rejoice and divide Shechem; I will measure out the Valley of Tents.
7 Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine, Ephraim is the strength of my head, and Judah is my king.
8 Moab is the basin of my hope; I will stretch my sandal over Edom. The Philistines were subjected to me.”
9 Who will lead me into a fortified city? Who will guide me as far as Edom?
10 Will it not be you, God, who rejected us? Will you not go out with our armies, God?
11 Give us help from affliction, because human rescue is futile.
12 Through God we will act with power, and he will treat those who afflict us as nothing.
