Psalms 42

For the end. For understanding, by the sons of Korah.

1 As a deer longs for springs of water, so my soul longs for you, God.
2 My soul thirsted for the living God. When will I come and appear before God’s face?
3 My tears became my bread day and night while they said to me every day,
“Where is your God?”
4 I remembered these things and poured out my soul within me: I will pass through the place of the wonderful tent to God’s house, amid a voice of rejoicing and thanksgiving—the sound of people celebrating a festival.
5 Why are you deeply sad, my soul, and why do you trouble me? Trust in God, because I will give thanks to him. My God is the rescue of my face.
6 My soul was troubled within me. Therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan and the Hermons, from the little mountain.
7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of your waterfalls. All your surging waters and waves passed over me.
8 By day the Lord will command his mercy, and by night a song will be with me—a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I will say to God, “You are my helper. Why did you forget me? Why do I walk with a gloomy face while my enemy oppresses me?”
10 As my bones were being crushed, those who afflicted me reproached me, saying every day,
“Where is your God?”
11 Why are you deeply sad, my soul, and why do you trouble me? Trust in God, because I will give thanks to him. My God is the rescue of my face.
