Psalms 22
For the end, concerning the help of the morning. A psalm by David.
God, my God, pay attention to me! Why did you abandon me? The words of my transgressions are far from my rescue.
My God, I will cry out by day, but you will not listen; I will cry out by night, and it will not be counted as foolishness on my part.
Yet you dwell among the holy, the praise of Israel.
Our ancestors trusted in you; they trusted, and you rescued them.
They cried out to you and were saved; they trusted in you and were not put to shame.
But I am a worm and not a man, a reproach among people and despised by the people.
Everyone who saw me mocked me; they spoke with their lips and shook their heads:
“He trusted in the Lord. Let the Lord rescue him! Let him save him, since he delights in him.”
Yet you are the one who pulled me from the womb, my hope from my mother’s breasts.
I was cast upon you from the womb; from my mother’s belly you have been my God.
Do not stand far from me, because distress is near and there is no one to help.
Many calves surrounded me; fat bulls encircled me.
They opened their mouths against me like a lion that seizes prey and roars.
I was poured out like water, and all my bones were scattered. My heart became like wax melting inside me.
My strength dried up like a piece of pottery, and my tongue stuck to my throat. You brought me down to the dust of death.
Many dogs surrounded me; a gathering of evildoers encircled me. They dug into my hands and feet.
I counted all my bones, while they watched and stared at me.
They divided my clothes among themselves and cast lots for my clothing.
But you, Lord, do not keep my help far away; pay attention and support me.
Rescue my life from the sword, my only life from the dog’s hand.
Save me from the lion’s mouth, and my humiliation from the horns of one-horned oxen.
I will tell my brothers about your name; in the middle of the assembly I will sing a hymn to you.
You who fear the Lord, praise him! All Jacob’s offspring, glorify him! All Israel’s offspring, fear him!
He did not despise or reject the poor person’s plea, nor did he turn his face away from me. When I cried out to him, he listened to me.
My praise comes from you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows before those who fear him.
The poor will eat and be filled, and those who seek the Lord will praise him. Their hearts will live forever and ever!
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before you.
For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules the nations.
All the prosperous people of the earth ate and bowed down; all who descend into the earth will fall before him. My soul lives for him.
My offspring will serve him; the coming generation will be announced to the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet to be born, because the Lord acted.
