Job 42

The Bible (Septuagint)

Job

Job 42

1 Then Job answered the Lord and said,

Now My Eye Has Seen You

2 I know that you can do all things,
and nothing is impossible for you.
3 For who is it that hides counsel from you?
Who holds his words back and thinks he can hide from you?
And who will tell me the things I did not know,
great and wonderful things I never understood?
4 Listen to me, Lord, and let me speak as well.
I will ask you, and you teach me.
5 Before now I had heard of you with the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye has seen you.
6 So I have counted myself worthless, and I have wasted away;
I count myself earth and ashes.

Seven Calves and Seven Rams

7 After the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “You have sinned, you and your two friends, for you have said nothing true in front of me, as my servant Job has. 8 So now take seven calves and seven rams and go to my servant Job, and he will make an altar offering for you. And Job my servant will pray for you, for I will accept no one’s face but his. If it were not for him, I would have destroyed you, because you did not speak the truth against my servant Job.” 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Minaean went and did as the Lord had ordered them, and he released them from their sin for Job’s sake.

Twice as Much

10 And the Lord increased Job. When he had prayed for his friends as well, the Lord let go of their sin; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before, doubling it all. 11 And all his brothers and his sisters heard everything that had happened to him and came to him, and so did everyone who had known him before. They ate and drank with him and comforted him, and they were astonished at everything the Lord had brought on him. And each of them gave him one ewe lamb and about four-fifths of an ounce of uncoined gold. 12 And the Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life more than the first: his cattle were fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand grazing female donkeys.

13 And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 14 He called the first Day, the second Cassia, and the third Amalthea’s Horn. 15 Nowhere under heaven were women found who were better than Job’s daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. 16 After the blow fell, Job lived 170 years; the whole of his life came to 248 years. And Job saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to the fourth generation.

An Old Man, Full of Days

17 And Job died, an old man and full of days. And it is written that he will rise again with those the Lord raises up. This man is set out from the Syriac book. He lived in the land of Ausis, on the borders of Idumea and Arabia, and his name before that was Jobab. He took an Arabian wife and fathered a son whose name was Ennon. His own father was Zerah, one of the sons of Esau, and his mother was Bozrah, so that he was the fifth from Abraham. And these are the kings who reigned in Edom, the country he too ruled over: first Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah; after Bela, Jobab, the one called Job; after him Husham, who was a leader out of the country of the Temanites; after him Hadad the son of Bedad, who cut down Midian in the plain of Moab, and the name of his city was Getthaim. And the friends who came to him were Eliphaz, of the sons of Esau, king of the Temanites; Bildad, ruler of the Shuhites; and Zophar, king of the Minaeans.
