Job
Job 41
Who Has Stood Against Me?
1 Have you not seen it? Have you not wondered at what is told of it?
Are you not afraid, because it has been made ready by me?
For who is there who has ever stood against me?
2 Or who will stand against me and hold out,
if everything under heaven is mine?
3 I will not keep silent on its account,
and a word of power will spare its match.
Its Armor
4 Who will uncover the face of its clothing?
Who could get inside the fold of its breastplate?
5 Who will open the gates of its face?
Around its teeth is terror.
6 Its insides are shields of bronze;
what holds it together is like emery stone.
7 One clings to another;
not a breath of air can pass between them.
8 Each is joined to its brother;
they hold together and cannot be pulled apart.
Fire out of Its Mouth
9 When it sneezes, light flashes out;
its eyes have the look of the morning star.
10 Out of its mouth come burning torches,
and hearths of fire are flung about.
11 Out of its nostrils comes the smoke of a furnace
burning with a fire of coals.
12 Its soul is live coals,
and a flame comes out of its mouth.
13 Power lodges in its neck;
destruction runs on ahead of it.
14 The flesh of its body is welded together;
pour what you like over it — it will not be shaken.
15 Its heart is set hard as stone;
it stands like an anvil that will not be beaten out.
16 When it turns, terror takes the four-footed animals
that go leaping over the earth.
Iron Is Chaff to It
17 If spears meet it, they do nothing —
not the raised shaft, not the breastplate.
18 For it counts iron as chaff
and bronze as rotten wood.
19 A bow of bronze will not wound it;
it counts a sling stone as grass.
20 Hammers are reckoned as stubble,
and it laughs at the shaking of a firebrand.
21 Its bed is made of sharp spikes,
and all the gold of the sea beneath it is clay past counting.
King of All in the Waters
22 It brings the deep to a boil like a cauldron;
it treats the sea like a jar of ointment,
23 and the Tartarus of the deep like a prisoner of war.
It counts the deep as a place to walk.
24 There is nothing on the earth like it,
made to be played with by my messengers.
25 It looks on everything high,
and it is king over all that are in the waters.
