Job
Job 35
1 Then Elihu spoke up and said:
What Is Your Righteousness to Him?
2 “What is this you have reckoned to be judgment?
Who are you, to say, ‘I am righteous before the Lord’?
3 Or will you say, ‘What will I do by sinning?’
I will give you an answer, and your three friends as well.
4 Look up at the sky and see;
study the clouds, and how high above you they are.
5 If you sinned, what will you bring about?
6 And if you have broken the law many times over, what can you do?
7 And since you are righteous, what will you give him?
Or what will he take out of your hand?
8 Your ungodliness touches a man like yourself,
and your righteousness a son of man.
Why the Cry Goes Unanswered
9 People shaken down by a crowd will cry out;
they will shout because of the arm of the many.
10 But no one said, ‘Where is God who made me,
who sets the watches of the night in their order,
11 who marks me off from the four-footed animals of the earth
and from the birds of the sky?’
12 There they will cry out, and he will not listen,
and that because of the insolence of wicked men.
13 For the Lord does not choose to look at what is out of place;
the Almighty himself is the watcher
14 of those who carry lawless deeds through — and he will save me.
Take your case to him,
if you can praise him as he is.
15 And now, because he is not calling anyone to account,
he has not made his anger felt,
and has taken no great notice of the offense;
16 and Job opens his mouth for nothing,
and, knowing nothing, piles words on heavily.”
